I know. Title sounds boring. But I wrote this last week, and I ended up really liking it, so I thought I would share it on here. It's about reading :) another of my favorite things.
On the weekends I slay dragons. I duel knights and defeat them too. I’ve even swallowed gillyweed to survive underwater for over sixty minutes while searching for what I treasure most. One time, I was born a Third and annihilated an alien species. Last week I fell off the bridge of San Luis Rey, but don’t worry, I survived. This morning I ran with vampires and rode motorcycles with my best friend, a werewolf. I’ve been in love a thousand times; my love life is quite a scandal. I once loved Heathcliffe, but now I’ve fallen for Rochester. On the other hand, Dimmesdale is secretly courting me, but Mr. Darcy is so dreamy. Oh! the many faces love takes, always tugging on the heart.
Real life is universal and written of in books. Etched into my being is a lawyer, a wizard, a princess, and a priest. I am American; I am British; I am Spanish, Russian too. What a wonderful, equal opportunistic world we live in when one young girl can live all her dreams. Disney boasts they can make dreams come true, but what good is simply being a princess if you can’t also hunt whales or discover alternate worlds within a wardrobe? A teenager I may be, but I have lived a thousand lives. I have lived through torture and fairytale and died a thousand deaths.
I must admit, however, what Hermione learned in her first year at Hogwarts: there are some things in life, like learning how to fly a broom stick, that you can’t learn by memorizing the pages of a book. For everything else, there’s MasterCard. OK, well that’s not true. The truth is that to fully appreciate a book and ignite with passion and excitement every time you smell the fresh pages of a new novel, one must be able to identify with the emotions of the characters. To share similar emotions, one must explore the world while boldly proclaiming, “I, Savannah Moore, am writing my own novel! Every day of my life contributes to the adventure, the romance, the mystery, and the history of my tale!” When my eyes first flicker open in the morning, the story of my life unfurls. Through my own unique experiences, I have come to realize the following: when I suffer, I am Cassandra; when I seek vengeance, I am V; when I feel rage, I am Achilles; when I wander, I am Psyche; when I forgive, I am Aslan; when I love, I am Mrs. Darcy; the list goes on and on.
So while I may not live in 1984 or know Da Vinci’s code, I do have great expectations while bearing in mind that all things fall apart. I live for something more than the little prince’s ephemeral rose; I live for the bridge, and the bridge is love.
